XRF in Archaeometry and Archaeological Science
Archaeometry, or the application of analytical techniques from the physical and chemical sciences to archaeology and conservation, is quickly becoming part of standard procedure for the conservation and archaeological science communities. SPECTRO XRF Archaeometry Analyzers offer the analytical capabilities you need, while Geotechnical Services offers the guidance and expertise you seek. We specialize in nondestructive, noninvasive instrumentation and consulting for the archaeometry community.
The many applications of XRF (x-ray fluorescence) in conservation and archaeological science include:
- Archaeological survey
- Provenance
- Conservation
- CRM
- NAGPRA Compliance
- Art (non-destructive analysis)
Whether your goal is to analyze pigments in order to authenticate a painting, or to test objects of Native American origin for heavy metal pesticides for NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act) compliance, we have the tools and know-how to help you get there.
SPECTRO xSORT Handheld XRF Analyzer for Archaeometry Applications
Elemental analysis of sensitive, non-homogeneous archaeological objects and works of art is a great challenge facing conservators and archaeological scientists. Often, objects are fragile and require special consideration when subjected to analysis. Another common problem is that larger objects, painting, etc. cannot fit into the sample chamber of a typical benchtop analyzer. The SPECTRO xSORT handheld XRF Archaeometry Analyzer is specifically designed with these considerations in mind. Analyze pottery, painting, clothing, and much more quickly, accurately, and completely nondestructively.

SPECTRO MIDEX M Benchtop XRF Analyzer for Archaeometry Applications
The MIDEX M XRF Analyzer provides fast, non-destructive elemental analysis of large surfaces in a mapping format. The MIDEX M currently has the fastest mapping speeds in the industry. Designed with an optimized excitation system and a motor driven XYZ sample platform, the SPECTRO MIDEX M can map a complete sample surface of 260x250 mm in less than two hours.
The SPECTRO MIDEX M uses a micro-focus X-ray tube combined with four software-selectable
analysis spot sizes to simultaneously detect all relevant elements from sodium (Na) to uranium (U)
in one single mapping measurement. Large windows and a double video system with high magnification make accurate sample placement easy. Ideal for mapping element distribution in paintings, painted surfaces, NAGPRA-related objects, and more, the SPECTRO MIDEX M is designed with you in mind.
