PH Solution |
What is a Buffer Solution?
A buffer solution is really for pH solutions. It is designed for use in pH calibration. Said another way, it is for pH meter calibration. Your meter and pH probe must be tested in a pH calibration solution prior to placing the probe in unknown pH solutions.
A buffer solution is an aqueous solution of a mixture of a weak acid or weak base with and it's conjugate base or conjugate acid. This causes the pH solutions to change very little when a strong acid or base is mixed-in in small amounts. A buffer solution is used to keep pH at a nearly constant value. This is extremely useful in pH meter calibration.
Because of the pH buffer effect, the hydrogen ion concentration shows little change. Your pH meter measures hydrogen ion concentration. What little of strong or weak acid added as you move the probe between pH buffer solution and unknown pH solutions, changes little the pH buffer solution. Similarly, when small amounts of strong alkali are added, the hydrogen ion concentration decreases but less than expected. Thus your pH meter calibration remains accurate. |

Buffers or Calibration Standards are a critical part of water quality monitoring. They supply the accuracy required to make sampling sessions count. Keep your instruments calibrated and up to specification by keeping buffers on hand and preforming the factory recommended calibration. Click in the button for assistance.
