 RoHS Compliance
RoHS compliance, or compliance with EU Directive 2002/95/EC, is a major challenge facing electronics manufacturers today. As the United States considers adopting similar legislation, becoming RoHS compliant and conducting RoHS compliance testing will be a concern for more and more companies and individuals in the electronics manufacturing industry. RoHS and similar regulations across the globe come as a result of environmental concerns due to the use of lead, cadmium, and other toxic heavy metals in electronics manufacturing. These concerns have brought increasing oversight to production of manufactured products.
In order to comply with these regulations, the electrical and electronics industry must implement screening protocol to determine if the levels of the regulated elements are within the limits prescribed by the regulations.
RoHS Directive and RoHS Compliance Specifics
The RoHS (Restriction on Hazardous Substances) directive limits the use of Cd, Pb, Hg, Br (PBB/DPBE), and hexavalent Cr in electrical and electronic products. The use of these materials in electrical and electronic products sold in the European Union is restricted as of the implementation in July of 2006. The limiting value is 100 mg/kg for cadmium (Cd), and 1000 mg/kg for lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), bromine (Br), and hexavalent chromium (Cr+6). All components of any electric and electronic equipment must not exceed these values and thus require regular inspections for RoHS compliance.
RoHS Compliance Testing with Micro XRF Benchtop Analyzer.
The Micro XRF has excellent qualifications for performing the necessary analysis with reference to the examination of Cd, Pb, Hg, Br, and Cr content in various raw materials and finished products. Fast, non-destructive analysis without expensive sample preparation and with a small measurement spot is the hallmark application of Micro XRF. Distinct advantages of using the Micro XRF Analyzer for RoHS Compliance Testing include:
- Large, small and micro-spot analysis
- Automated sample positioning platform allows for effortless elemental mapping of printed circuit boards
- Integrated video system and two laser pointers for exact sample positioning
RoHS Compliance Testing with Handheld XRF Analyzer
Handheld XRF Analyzers are an excellent tool for RoHS compliance screening. Featuring unparalleled speed and portability, XRF is right the tool for spot checks, screening of questionable components, and general RoHS compliance testing needs.
