PTFE Tape
We sell PTFE tape in two widths, 3 inch and of 4
inch allowing for use with 1" to 3" diameter sample sleeves. It comes
in rolls, much like toilet paper, perforated every four inches for
easy removal and application. The tape is not as stretchable as
tapes that are used to seal pipes in the plumbing industry. It is
also not as thin. Try it you will like it, and it may raise the
level of your standard practice in soil sampling. Ask for a free
test sample!
PTFE tape is used in the environmental industry
to help seal the top and bottom of soil samples. These samples are
taken to test for the presence of volatile and liquid organics.
Since the Plastic Caps used to cover the ends of the brass sample
sleeve are thought to have plasticizes, it has become practice to
place a PTFE or fluorocarbon sheet between the cap and the soil.
This is thought to protect the sample from contamination which might
be caused by the cap. It may also help seal in any volatiles. It
seems like a good idea. However, we know of no studies concerning
the effectiveness of this practice. We do know that since the 1980's
the use of these sheets has been state of the art or standard practice
in certain areas of the United States.
